Why robots look like this

The friendly robot silhouette — boxy torso, tracks instead of legs, large forward eyes — comes from real engineering constraints that animators and designers then borrowed. Tracks handle rubble and stairs better than wheels and are far simpler than legs. A cube houses batteries and electronics efficiently. Wide-set cameras give stereo vision and therefore depth.

The eyes being large is the only purely aesthetic part, and it is the one that does the emotional work.
