Handcrafted in iron and finished in silver and bronze, with the Type 35's unmistakable horseshoe grille, tapered tail and eight-spoke alloy wheels — the first cast-alloy wheels ever fitted to a racing car, with the brake drums built into them.

The car
Introduced at the 1924 Lyon Grand Prix with a straight-eight engine, the Type 35 went on to take over 1,000 race wins and set more than 40 records — including five consecutive Targa Florio victories. Ettore Bugatti sold it to private owners as well as running works cars, which is why the win count is so absurd: on any given weekend, half the grid was Type 35s.
Bugatti reportedly chose the horseshoe grille shape because he liked horses. The engineering underneath was rather more considered.
