The aircraft

The Ki-43 Hayabusa — Peregrine Falcon — was built to one obsession: manoeuvrability. It was extraordinarily light, fitted with butterfly combat flaps that tightened its turn further, and could out-turn almost anything sent against it.

The cost was everything else. Early versions carried two rifle-calibre machine guns, no armour and no self-sealing tanks. It shot down more Allied aircraft than any other Japanese Army fighter, and it burned when hit. Allied intelligence assigned it the reporting name Oscar; pilots frequently reported it as a Zero regardless.
