The vehicle Eisenhower named as one of the three weapons that won the war — alongside the Dakota and the landing craft, and ahead of any tank.
Handcrafted in iron, hand-painted olive drab, with rolling metal wheels, the flat slotted grille, folded windscreen and jerrycan-and-spare arrangement of a wartime MB.

The vehicle
The MB weighed about 2,450 lb, carried three men and a machine gun, and would climb a 60 percent grade. Willys built roughly 360,000 and Ford built another 280,000 to the same drawings under licence.
Where the name came from is still argued. "GP" for general purpose is the tidy explanation; the trouble is that soldiers were calling them jeeps before that designation was in common use. The competing account credits Eugene the Jeep, a small omnipotent creature from the Popeye comic strip who could go anywhere and solve anything.
