The machine

The upright cooler vending machine appeared in the 1930s and changed where cold drinks could be sold — no counter, no staff, no premises required beyond a plug and a few square feet. Petrol stations, factory floors and shop doorways all became points of sale.

The tall red machine with a chrome handle is one of the most recognisable pieces of industrial design of the century, and largely by accident: the shape was dictated by the bottle racks inside it.
