Choosing the size

The large version is a display object that happens to hold pens; this one is a pen holder that happens to look good. If the desk is already crowded, or the piece is going on a shelf among books, the small size sits better.

The animal

Dolphins navigate and hunt by echolocation, producing clicks in the nasal passages and focusing them through a fatty organ in the forehead called the melon. They can distinguish objects differing by a fraction of an inch, and read the internal structure of what they are looking at — a dolphin scanning a fish effectively sees its skeleton.
