Why trains at Christmas

The association is largely commercial and largely American. Lionel began putting trains in shop windows around 1900 as moving displays, and the sets sold so well at Christmas that the company leaned into it entirely.

Running a train around the base of the tree took hold from there, helped by the fact that a circle of track fits neatly around a tree stand. By the 1950s it was traditional, which is how most traditions start.
