On the snuffer

A snuffer is not a decoration and it is not the same as blowing a candle out. Blowing scatters hot wax and sends up a plume of smoke and soot. A bell snuffer starves the flame of oxygen instead — no smoke, no spatter, and the wick stays upright and centred for the next lighting.

It also stops the ember from smouldering, which is the thing that actually leaves a burnt smell in a room for an hour afterwards.
