The bus

The Routemaster entered service in 1956 and was built like an aircraft — aluminium construction, no separate chassis, independent front suspension and power steering, at a time when most buses had none of those things.

The open rear platform is what people remember: no doors, a conductor on board, and passengers free to hop on and off between stops. It was also, by any modern reading, wildly unsafe, which is why it eventually went. A few still run heritage routes through central London.
