About rat rods
Hot rodders in the 1940s built fast cars from cheap old ones because that was all they could afford. By the 1990s the scene had turned expensive and immaculate, so a counter-movement went the other way on purpose — surface rust left alone, mismatched panels, no paint, engineering visible rather than hidden.
A rat rod is a statement about what a custom car is for. It also makes a considerably better-looking object than a polished show car, because there is nothing to distract from the shapes.
