The oldest subject

Dogs are among the most common animals in decorative sculpture and have been for thousands of years — Egyptian, Greek, Chinese and Mesoamerican traditions all produced them, usually placed at thresholds.

The reason is consistent across cultures: a dog at a doorway means the same thing everywhere. The Chinese guardian lions outside buildings, the Roman cave canem mosaics in entrance halls, the pair of stone hounds at the foot of a country house staircase — all the same idea, which is why an entrance or hearth is still the natural place for one.
