Pairing them

Apple and pear together work better than either alone, and the reason is height. Two objects of identical size read as a matched set and go a bit dead; two of different heights create a line for the eye to travel along.

Interior designers call it the rule of odds or the stepped grouping — arrange in threes where you can, and vary the height. Two fruit and a stack of books does the same job.
