Why a cutaway
A submarine is the least legible warship there is. From outside it is a smooth tube with a fin — nothing tells you what is happening inside, which is precisely the point of the design.
Sectioning it reverses that. The pressure hull, the compartment divisions, the machinery spaces, the torpedo room and the cramped scale of the accommodation all become visible at once, and the ratio of machinery to living space explains more about submarine service than any photograph.
Cutaways are also harder to build. Every interior surface a closed hull hides has to be finished to display standard.
Suits a study, classroom, office or collection where a piece is meant to explain something rather than only decorate.
