The boat
Commissioned in 2010 and built at Barrow-in-Furness, Astute carries a Rolls-Royce PWR2 reactor fuelled for the whole of her 25-year service life. She will never need refuelling.
She has no periscope. Instead she uses optronic masts — sensor packages that send images to screens in the control room, which means the control room no longer has to sit directly beneath the fin. It is the first British submarine designed that way.
Her sonar is reportedly sensitive enough to detect a ship leaving harbour on the far side of the Atlantic.
Her start was less impressive: in October 2010 she ran aground off the Isle of Skye during a crew transfer and had to be towed clear.
