The boat
Commissioned in 1967, Resolution was the first of four submarines built to carry Polaris missiles — and with them, responsibility for the British nuclear deterrent, which passed from the RAF's V-bomber force to the Royal Navy.
The reasoning was survivability. Airfields can be destroyed on the ground and bombers can be shot down. A submarine on patrol cannot be found, so retaliation remains possible no matter what happens above.
On 15 June 1968 Resolution began the first deterrent patrol. Since 1969, at least one British ballistic missile submarine has been at sea continuously — Operation Relentless, the longest sustained military operation in British history, still running.
