The boat
Not the 1906 battleship — this is the submarine, launched by the Queen on Trafalgar Day 1960 and commissioned in 1963.
She was a hybrid. Admiral Rickover, who ran the American nuclear programme and was famously reluctant to share anything, agreed to sell Britain a complete S5W reactor plant. So Dreadnought had a British bow and an American stern, and the crew joked about the joint halfway down.
In March 1971 she surfaced through the ice at the North Pole, the first British submarine to do so. She was decommissioned in 1980 and, four decades on, is still laid up at Rosyth awaiting disposal — defuelled but not dismantled, along with most of the boats that followed her.
