The boat
A conventional submarine has to surface or snorkel every day or two to run its diesels and recharge, and that is when it is found. The Type 212A carries hydrogen and oxygen and generates electricity in fuel cells — silently, with no moving parts and no exhaust — which lets it stay submerged for weeks.
The hull is built from non-magnetic austenitic steel, so it is nearly invisible to the magnetic anomaly detectors carried by maritime patrol aircraft.
In a 2003 exercise a Type 212A penetrated a NATO carrier group screen and achieved simulated kills. Operated by Germany, Italy and Norway.
