The boat
Arihant — Sanskrit for slayer of enemies — was commissioned in 2016 after a development programme that ran for three decades, much of it classified to the point that the government would not confirm the submarine existed.
Her significance is strategic rather than tactical. India's declared nuclear doctrine is no first use, which only works if the country can absorb a first strike and still retaliate. Land-based missiles and aircraft can be destroyed on the ground. A missile submarine at sea cannot be found.
Arihant completed India's nuclear triad and made that doctrine credible — making India one of only six nations operating submarine-launched ballistic missiles.
