India's INS Kalvari Submarine (S21) is the lead submarine of the Kalvari-class diesel-electric attack submarines built for the Indian Navy. Based on the French Scorpène design by Naval Group, India's INS Kalvari Submarine (S21) was constructed by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) in Mumbai under India's "Make in India" initiative. The project aimed to enhance India's underwater warfare capabilities with modern, stealthy submarines. Kalvari was launched in 2015 and commissioned into service on 14 December 2017. The submarine features advanced stealth technology, making it difficult to detect underwater. It is equipped with precision-guided torpedoes and anti-ship missiles, capable of neutralizing surface and sub-surface threats. Powered by diesel-electric propulsion with air-independent propulsion (AIP) planned for future upgrades, the Kalvari has a top submerged speed of over 20 knots and can stay underwater for extended periods, thereby enhancing its operational reach. India's INS Kalvari Submarine (S21) plays a vital role in strengthening the Indian Navy's capabilities in the Indian Ocean Region. As of 2025, several submarines of this class are in active service, with more under construction. The Kalvari-class represents a key step in India's push toward self-reliance in defense and modernizing its submarine fleet to counter regional maritime challenges.
