The boat
Kalvari was commissioned in 2017, the first of six Scorpène-class submarines built at Mazagon Dock in Mumbai under licence from France's Naval Group.
She is the second Indian submarine to carry the name. The first Kalvari, a Soviet-built Foxtrot, was India's first submarine of any kind when she was commissioned in 1967 — and the date is still observed as Indian Navy Submarine Day.
The name is a Malayalam word for the tiger shark.
