The ship
Commissioned in September 2022 after seventeen years of construction at Cochin Shipyard, Vikrant made India the fifth country able to design and build a carrier of this size domestically — alongside the United States, Russia, France and China.
She is the second ship of the name. The first Vikrant was the former HMS Hercules, bought incomplete from Britain and commissioned in 1961. In the 1971 war she blockaded East Pakistan, and her Sea Hawks flew strikes that helped decide the campaign.
The steel in the new ship is domestic too — specialist warship-grade plate that India had previously imported and developed specifically for this hull.
