History
Jean Bart was still incomplete in June 1940 when Germany overran France. Her yard workers got her out of Saint-Nazaire days ahead of the advancing army with one turret fitted, no anti-aircraft armament and no fire control, and ran her to Casablanca.
In November 1942, during the Allied landings in North Africa, she duelled USS Massachusetts from her moorings — a stationary, half-finished battleship trading fire with a complete one. She was hit repeatedly and silenced.
She was finally completed in 1955 and served as a training ship until 1961. No French battleship has been built since.
