The size of her
Vanguard-class boats displace nearly 16,000 tonnes submerged, roughly twice the Resolution class they replaced. The extra bulk is mostly missile compartment — sixteen tubes, each large enough to hold a missile with a range of over 7,000 miles.
At larger scale the proportions become clear. The raised casing running most of the hull's length is the missile deck, and it is the reason a deterrent submarine looks so different from an attack boat: one is built around weapons, the other around sensors.
The boat
Commissioned 1993. Collided with the French Le Triomphant in the Atlantic in 2009 — neither submarine detected the other. Britain has maintained an unbroken at-sea deterrent patrol since 1969.
