Two crews, one boat
Deterrent submarines are crewed in pairs — Port and Starboard — who alternate patrols. The boat comes in, one crew walks off, the other walks on, and it sails again within days.
The reason is simple economics: submarines are enormously expensive and time alongside is time wasted. Two crews roughly double the days at sea each hull delivers.
A patrol runs for months with no contact home beyond a short personal message that cannot be replied to. The boat transmits nothing, because transmitting is how you get found.
History
Commissioned 1967. Began the first British Polaris patrol in June 1968. Continuous at-sea deterrence has been maintained ever since.
