Why small submarines matter
The Type 209 makes an argument that runs against instinct: for many navies, smaller is better. A compact diesel-electric boat costs a fraction of a nuclear submarine, needs a crew of around thirty rather than a hundred and thirty, and — critically — is quieter than any nuclear boat when running on batteries, because it has no reactor coolant pumps that must never stop.
In shallow coastal water, where a large submarine is at a disadvantage, that combination is genuinely formidable. It is the reason a dozen navies chose this design over anything else available.
