The Scorpène design
Scorpène-class boats are built by France's Naval Group and operated by Chile, Malaysia, India and Brazil. They are conventional diesel-electric submarines with a strong emphasis on acoustic discretion — machinery mounted on isolating rafts, a hull form designed to minimise flow noise, and batteries that let the boat run silent.
The export success of the design comes down to one thing: a nuclear submarine is beyond the budget and industrial base of most navies, while a quiet modern conventional boat delivers most of the capability in coastal and regional waters.
The name
The Battle of Riachuelo, fought on 11 June 1865 during the Paraguayan War, is commemorated as Brazilian Navy Day.
