The scale of her
The numbers are hard to hold onto. Each 46cm gun barrel weighed 165 tons. Each turret weighed about 2,500 tons — more than a contemporary destroyer, mounted on a bearing and expected to rotate. Her main belt armour was 410mm thick.
She could throw a shell 42 kilometres, and the muzzle blast was violent enough that exposed crew had to be below decks or behind shielding when the main battery fired.
At larger scale the hull's distinctive bulbous forefoot and flared bow become visible — hydrodynamic work that let a ship this heavy reach 27 knots.
History
Sunk on 7 April 1945 en route to Okinawa on a mission she was not expected to return from. 276 men survived out of 3,332.
