The class
The Queen Elizabeths were the first battleships built to burn oil rather than coal, and it changed everything. Oil gave more power per tonne, could be pumped rather than shovelled by hundreds of stokers, and let a ship refuel at sea. It made 24 knots possible on a full battleship hull — fast enough to work with the battlecruiser squadrons.
It also committed the Royal Navy, and Britain, to securing oil supplies it did not own. Churchill, then First Lord of the Admiralty, bought a controlling stake in the Anglo-Persian Oil Company in 1914 to guarantee them.
Service
Fifteen battle honours across two wars — Jutland, Narvik, Calabria, Matapan, Crete, Salerno, Normandy. No British ship has more.
