What a battlecruiser was for
Jackie Fisher's idea was simple and, for a while, persuasive: speed is armour. A ship fast enough to choose the range can destroy anything it catches and outrun anything that could hurt it, so the weight normally spent on belt plating goes into engines instead.
It worked against cruisers and failed catastrophically against battleships. Three British battlecruisers blew up at Jutland in 1916, and HMS Hood — the last and largest — went the same way against Bismarck in 1941.
Repulse was rebuilt twice between the wars to add the armour she had been designed without. It was aircraft that killed her in the end.
History
Sunk off Malaya on 10 December 1941 alongside HMS Prince of Wales — the first capital ships free to manoeuvre ever destroyed by air attack alone.
