The pagoda mast
The towering, cluttered forward superstructure is the signature of Japanese capital ships of this era, and it grew by accretion rather than design.
Each refit added another platform — rangefinders, searchlight controls, anti-aircraft directors, signal positions — stacked onto the original tripod mast until the structure reached the height of a ten-storey building. It was top-heavy, offered a large target, and gave superb visibility.
Western navies solved the same problem with enclosed tower bridges. Japan kept building upward.
History
The Pearl Harbor execution order was sent from her bridge. She was the only Japanese battleship afloat at the surrender, and was sunk at Bikini Atoll in 1946 after surviving two nuclear tests.
