The animal

A starfish has no brain and no blood. It moves on hundreds of tiny tube feet driven by a hydraulic system that pumps seawater through the body, and it eats by pushing its stomach out through its mouth, digesting prey externally, then drawing the stomach back in.

Most species can regenerate a lost arm, and a few can rebuild an entire animal from one arm and a fragment of the central disc — which is why fishermen who once tore them apart to protect shellfish beds found the population going up rather than down.
