The Golden Devil under full canvas, running before the wind — every sail set and drawing, yards squared, the whole rig pulling in one direction.

A downwind set roughly doubles the sailmaking and rigging work over a standard model. Each sail has to be cut, stitched and hung so the rig reads as a single moving system rather than a collection of parts.

Limited to 100 units

One hundred were produced, each with a serial number etched into the hull recording its build date, timber and workshop. The edition closes when they are gone.

Construction

• Plank-on-frame hull in western red cedar, rosewood and mahogany
• Deep-carved and gilded stern gallery, quarter galleries and beakhead
• Three gun decks with cast cannon and carved port wreaths
• Full downwind sail set in hand-stitched linen
• Complete hand-knotted standing and running rigging
• Solid wood base and engraved brass nameplate

The ship

Launched at Woolwich in 1637 for Charles I with 102 guns and more gilded carving than any warship before or since. She fought the Dutch in three wars over a sixty-year career and burned by accident in 1697.
