The longest wooden ship still in existence, rendered in wood by hand and finished in her painted Danish livery.

Built plank on frame in western red cedar, rosewood and mahogany. Jylland sits at the hinge between two eras — a full sailing rig above, a steam engine and screw below — and the model carries both.

Construction

  • Plank-on-frame hull, hand-painted with white gun-port strake over black topsides
  • Three masts with complete hand-knotted standing and running rigging
  • Hand-stitched linen sails
  • Funnel, gun ports with cast cannon, ship's boats, wheel and deck fittings
  • Metal anchors and wooden rudder
  • Solid wood base and engraved brass nameplate

History

Launched at Copenhagen in 1860, Jylland is 71 metres of oak — the longest wooden vessel surviving anywhere. She fought at the Battle of Helgoland in May 1864 against the Austrian and Prussian fleets, the last significant naval action fought by ships under sail and steam together. After service as a royal yacht and a barracks hulk she was very nearly scrapped, and was saved by public subscription. She is preserved in dry dock at Ebeltoft.
