Cook's Endeavour at 37.8 inches, hand-painted, in rosewood, mahogany and teak. Our largest edition of the ship.

Scale suits this subject in an unexpected way. Endeavour was a blunt, flat-bottomed coal carrier, not a graceful warship, and a large hull makes that honest working-vessel shape legible instead of merely small.

History

Launched at Whitby in 1764 as the collier Earl of Pembroke and bought by the Navy in 1768, she was chosen for exactly the qualities that made her unglamorous: a strong flat-bottomed hull that could be beached for repair. That choice saved the expedition on 11 June 1770, when she struck the Great Barrier Reef and her crew threw guns and ballast overboard to float her off. Cook charted the whole of New Zealand's coast in her and became the first European to reach eastern Australia.
